FAQ
We are often asked about
residence permits for financially
independent persons in Spain
Who is this status suitable for?
Citizens who have “white” passive income and dream of obtaining a second citizenship or buying real estate in Spain. And also for those who prefer to travel freely to other countries belonging to the European Union. A residence permit is issued to a citizen of a country that is not a member of the European Union. The status is issued by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior at the place of registration of the foreigner.
What are the requirements for the applicant?
In order to obtain a residence permit, the candidate must be over 18 years of age and solvent. Spanish authorities may refuse to issue a residence permit if the applicant has shown insufficient financial resources or provided false information.
How can you prove financial independence?
It is necessary to provide evidence of passive income: dividends, rental agreement, ownership, bank statements, etc. If we talk about bank statements, you must have more than 12,000 € per person in an account in a Spanish or other international bank (500 € per person per month, 1000 euros per family per month). There are no rules for banks; they consider both statements from Russian banks and foreign accounts. You also need a stable income of 1,500 € per month per person. It is advisable to have several different sources of income: salary, rental property, deposits, fees, bank savings, etc.
Is language knowledge required?
No, to obtain this type of residence permit you do not need to know Spanish. But if a foreigner plans to permanently reside in Spain and obtain permanent residence, it will still be necessary to learn Spanish.
Do I need to live permanently in Spain?
To maintain your residence permit status, you do not need to live permanently in the country and become a Spanish tax resident. A foreigner who has received a residence permit on the basis of financial independence becomes a tax resident of Spain if he lives in the country for more than 183 days a year. However, if an immigrant plans to obtain permanent residence and Spanish citizenship in the future, then he must reside permanently in the country, at least for most of the year, and become a tax resident. *There is a 180-day rule that must be observed, i.e. the visa holder must stay in the EU for 180 days a year, otherwise a shorter period may affect the extension.
Can I work?
A foreigner receives a long-term visa type D on the basis of financial independence in the country of residence. On it he comes to Spain. This visa does not imply remote work and does not give the right to work or do business in Spain. A candidate for a residence permit must have passive income that will allow him to live without working at all.
Is it possible to extend a residence permit?
Yes, it is quite easy to renew a residence permit; you must provide all evidence of passive income: dividends, lease agreement, ownership, bank statements, etc. Usually extended from 1 to 2 years. You must show a high level of passive income, otherwise the extension will not be approved. And if the residence permit holder paid taxes and increased passive income, this is a 100% approval option.
